Island Day
There are lots of opportunities for island day trips in the U.S. Here you can enjoy all kinds of adventures off the beaten path and in the water. The United States is home to many islands from coast to coast. For individuals and families seeking one day getaways, it is a good idea to stay close to home. The less travel involved in a day trip, the better. Depending on where you live there may be one or more nearby islands ideal for a day-long respite from the stressors of the workaday world.
Both residents of and visitors to the sunny state of Florida have many appealing options. Islands here include Amelia Island, Anna Maria Island and of course the Florida Keys. The Florida Keys are an archipelago of islands that include Key Largo, a popular tourist spot. Of course you may want to explore some of the less popular keys if you're in the mood for a laid back getaway free from visiting tourists. If you happen to be in Virginia you could visit Chincoteague Island, famous for its wild horses. There are islands in Delaware, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and a number of other states.
Then of course there's Hawaii. If you are lucky enough to visit or reside in this tropical paradise you can enjoy outings on one of the six islands -- Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Oahu, Lanai and Molokai. Whether you spend your day lounging by the ocean, hiking to a majestic waterfall or touring a Kona coffee plantation you are sure to enjoy a day long outing in this spectacular state. Every year, many tourists visit Hawaii and experience the wonder and majesty its island has to offer. Although Hawaii is probably the most popular destination when it comes to U.S. islands, it is certainly not the only one.
When planning an island day trip, preparation is key to an enjoyable experience. Create an itinerary in advance and estimate your schedule. Allow extra time for unforseen delays. For most day trips there is very little packing involved. However you will want to bring a first aid kit, cell phone, form of currency and any other essential items. Depending on where you're going and what you're doing your packing needs may be more extensive. As you will discover islands are usually great places for fishing, boating, hiking, biking, shopping, dining and much more!
